Maruti Suzuki’s Alto has emerged as the strongest selling product for 16 glorious years. The Alto consistently remained the preferred choice of first time car buyers and has been the source of pride for a young India wanting to get behind the wheels.
Launched way back in 2000, the Alto which was marketed as a more premium and spacious alternative to the Maruti 800 quickly rose to become the bestseller in the market by 2004.
Speaking on this remarkable achievement, Mr Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, “Consistently setting new benchmarks in the Indian auto Industry, Alto is the undisputed leader in India for 16 years in a row establishing its dominance in the competitive entry segment. owing to its unparalleled performance, compact design, easy manoeuvrability, high fuel-efficiency, affordability and timely convenience and safety related upgrades. Backed by a strong legacy, Alto continues to appeal to customers across the length and breadth of the country, with 76% customers choosing it as their 1st car.”
Having absolutely no competition in the market during the early run, the entry level hatchback continued unshaken, however despite the launch of the Tata Nano in 2008, the Alto managed to sell 10 lakh units which doubled to 20 lakh in 2012 with the arrival of the Alto800. Even though the the Renault Kwid posed a serious threat, this didn’t dether the car from selling 30 lakh units in 2016.
Maruti Suzuki also made several updates to the Alto small car over the years with minor facelifts and added many crucial and much wanted features to the car. In 2010, the automaker even went on to introduce a CNG powered Alto which was well accepted in rural areas.
He added, “Alto’s unrivalled journey has enabled mobility for the new and young India and has turned millions of dreams into reality. The strong customer base of Alto is a testament of customers appreciating the timely upgrades and refreshment in the brand. Maruti Suzuki has kept a close eye on the evolving customer preferences and aligned its product range to such changes. With Alto becoming India’s bestselling car for 16 consecutive years, we express our gratitude to the customers for their trust and faith in the brand.”
Drawing its power from a 796cc engine, it was the 1.1 litre engine commonly known as 1061cc engine that set the bar rolling on a higher note. Coming back to today the Alto brand is separated into two types – Alto 800 and Alto K10 the former has been discontinued.
In bs6 era, the Alto 800 makes a potent 35.3kw of power at 6000rpm and 69Nm of torque at 3500rpm with the sole transmission option being a 5-speed manual gearbox. Mileage figures are rated at 22.05kmpl in petrol and 31.56kmpl in CNG.
Further confirming to the safety regulations the latest Alto 800 standard safety features driver side airbag, ABS and EBD, reverse parking sensor, high speed alert system and seat belt reminder for both driver and co-driver.
