Maruti Suzuki has launched the big new Waganor priced at Rs 4.19 lakhs (ex showroom). Bookings for the car had commenced just on the 14th January for a token amount of Rs 11,000 and the company has already claimed 12,000 bookings have been raked across pan India.
Based on the now common Heartect platform which underpins most modern Maruti Suzuki models, the latest iteration of the Waganor is wider, taller, and more spacious yet has a larger boot as well. The styling has moved away from what was once a boxy design to something that’s more rounded and smoother at the edges.
The face wears a handsome looking front grille with a thick chrome band flanked by unique dual split headlamps. Lower down the bumper sports a clean design with the fog lamps placed on both side and an air dam in the middle. Move ahead to the side and the car continues with the slab sided profile the Waganor is known for, however it does get some prominent lines and a floating roof courtesy a blacked out portion. At the back the taillamps look inspired from the Honda CR-V and the Volvos.
The concept of addressing the latest generation Waganor to be taller, wider and bigger is clearly evident from the moment you step in as you are greeted by the presence of loads more headroom, legroom and overall space. There’s also sense of spaciousness in the car which was never present on any of the earlier generation of the Waganors.
The modern upmarket dashboard comes finished in beige and black colour scheme and gets vertically placed A/C vents at the centre and round ones at either side. Sitting at the top of the centre console however is a Smartplay infotainment system that gets its own unique interface unlike the unit on the Swift and Dzire. It also gets a new steering wheel and instrument cluster that lends a sporty feel to the driver.
In terms of features, Maruti Suzuki has packed the car with features such as electrically foldable wing mirrors, 60:40 split seats, steering mounted controls and tilt adjustment for steering wheel. On the safety side, the Waganor comes with dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and integrated parking sensors.
Powering the car for the first time is more powerful 1.2 litre four cylinder petrol motor. The engine produces 61 Kw at 6000rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4200rpm. On the other hand, the 1.0 litre three cylinder petrol engine which powered the current car has been reworked to produce 50 Kw at 5500rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3500rpm.
Transmission options for both engines include a 5-speed manual and AMT. Buyers should understand that Maruti Suzuki is offering the AGS automated manual transmission from the Vxi onwards and can be had on either of the engines on offer.
The company claims 22.5 kmpl for the 1.0 litre petrol AGS and 22.5 kmpl for the petrol manual. Similarly the newly introduced and larger 1.2 litre engine delivers 21.5 kmpl in both manual and AMT or AGS as Maruti calls it.
Another interesting note for buyers is the option to choose from 6 paint schemes namely Magma grey, Silky silver, Superior white, Autumn Orange, Nutmeg brown and Poolside blue.
